Investment opportunities to produce petrochemical products from olefin
Abstract
With the aim of developing the petrochemical field to meet the domestic demand and move towards export, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) has studied opportunities for investment in the production of petrochemical products. Accordingly, the products of petrochemical complexes are essential products from two sources of olefin materials (ethylene and/or propylene) produced through the methanol conversion process. The proposed products include SM (styrene monomer), PS (poly styrene), PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate), AA (acrylic acid), 2-EH (2-ethylhexanol), 2-EHA (2-ethylhexyl acrylate) and n-butanol.
The article analyses the opportunity to invest in the production of petrochemical products in Vietnam from olefin, particularly in terms of product consumption, technology and financial feasibility. On the basis of comparing total investment and the economic efficiency of complexes producing petrochemical products from olefin, the authors propose to develop a complex to produce MMA, PMMA and EVA from ethylene as well as recommend suitable mechanisms/conditions to help the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group have the basis for selection of effective investment projects.
