Technical solution for recovering gaseous NH3 at Phu My fertilizer plant
Abstract
NH3 is always generated during NH3 manufacturing process and storage in ammonia plants. NH3 gas recovery is not only economically beneficial but also environmentally significant as it helps reduce NH3 gas emissions. Normally, the generated NH3 gas will be recovered by a recovery compressor according to licensors’ design. However, technology modification and equipment wear and tear after a period of operation may substantially increase the amount of NH3 gas generated, which exceeds the designed recovery capacity.
The authors proposed two technically feasible solutions, namely: (i) upgrading the existing recovery compressor system 40PK5001K1 A/B in the Utility Unit, and (ii) installing a new pipeline to take advantage of the unused capacity of compressor 10K4051 in the NH3 Unit to fully capture the NH3 gas generated. The results showed that solution (ii) is highly effective, enabling recovery of all NH3 gas with a reasonable investment.
