Abstract

Bach Ho is the largest oil field in Vietnam with oil initially in place of over 500 million tons. Field production is highly intensive with the peak of production amounting to over 12 million tons per year from Mesozoic granitoid basement reservoir in the Tertiary sedimentary basin.

Results of oil production from the basement reservoirs of Bach Ho, Rong, and other oil fields reveal the diversity of geological model with the presence of aquifer and the difference in fluid composition and distribution by depth. Oil in the fractured basement reservoir is discovered at the depth range of nearly 2,000m to 4,000m. Crude properties such as density, viscosity, and soluble gas ratio vary from area to area. The complex porosity-permeability distribution increases the risk of new exploration and infill wells.

Currently, besides Vietsovpetro Joint Venture, other oil and gas operators are producing from fractured basement reservoir with low recovery rate. It is, therefore, necessary to exchange experiences with Vietsovpetro in order to increase the production efficiency.
