Some preliminary results from study of the potential of ferromanganese crusts in Pliocene - Quaternary sediments, offshore Southwestern Vietnam
Abstract
Nam Con Son and Tu Chinh – Vung May basins are considered to have big potential of seabed hard minerals such as ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts or aggregates. Analysis of samples collected from the southwestern area of the East Sea shows that the Fe-Mn content varies from 15 – 21% along with the presence of other valuable metal elements such as Ti (11.092 ppm), Ba (3.836 ppm), and Ni (1.932 ppm), etc. Moreover, some rare earth elements are also encountered with fairly high fraction (roughly 370 ppm/sample in average), of which Ce (168 ppm), La (52 ppm), and Nd (43 ppm) are predominant. These samples were formed mainly by hydrogenetic and hydrothermal processes. The formation of the Fe-Mn oxide samples is closely relating to accumulation of rare earth elements such as La, Ce, Pr, Sm, Eu, etc.
