Abstract

Terephthalic acid (TA) is the main feedstock in the polyester industry. TA is produced from p-Xylene oxidation, then purified to form purified terephthalic acid (PTA) or qualified terephthalic acid (QTA). This paper assesses the possibility of investing in the construction of a PTA and QTA production plant using p-Xylene from refineries in Vietnam as feedstock in order to complete the raw material supply chain for Petrovietnam’s plants. The assessment is made based on criteria of product market, raw materials, production technology, total investment and financial efficiency with 2 cases of capacity (1MTA and 550KTA), and different scenarios of QTA/PTA production proportion and crude oil prices. Research result suggests that investment in the construction of a PTA/QTA plant should be considered when crude oil prices reach USD 100 per barrel by 2023 and that focus should be given to QTA more than to PTA to increase economic efficiency.
