Mitigation of methane emissions in energy industry
Abstract
Methane emission reduction is one of the most effective measures to mitigate global climate change. According to the Global Methane Status Report released at COP30 [1], more than 80% of potential methane reductions by 2030 can be achieved at low cost, with the energy sector contributing 72%. Well-established solutions - such as leak detection and repair programs, closing abandoned wells - represent the majority of the needed actions.
This paper analyzes the current status of methane emission reduction in the global oil & gas industry and presents the experiences of major energy corporations (BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, ConocoPhillips, Eni) in establishing methane reduction goals through advanced technologies, sustainable development investments, and research and development collaboration. Based on the analysis of international experiences, the paper proposes appropriate solutions to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector in general and for the Petrovietnam in particular.
